Day 12 - Rural Studio

The day was spent touring around small towns in Alabama to see projects done by Auburn University's Rural Studio. We looked at a lot of interesting projects, and visited the rural studio office in Newbern. Here there are a series of pods that were designed and built by students for students to live in while they worked on other projects, as the university is not nearby. The cabins are used as test materials, and are each unique.
We also looked at two lamella structures that incorporated more rectilinear enclosures. The first had a building within the lamella, while the second had one side of the lamella raised up to sit on the building.

Rudolph, Tuskegee University Chapel, Tuskegee AL

First off let me say that some of these photos are not the greatest quality because it is difficult to take a clear photo under low light without a tripod.
Secondly, the scale of the Tuskegee University Chapel was amazing. The use of natural lighting and colouring it through glass really sets the atmosphere as well. The building has a large leaking problem from the skylights though, however we were there during a huge thunderstorm and the building is quite old.

Sarah's Church

When we were in Greensboro at the fire station built by Rural Studio we met up with a woman who lives in the neighborhood. She was quite interested in what we were doing and wanted to tour with us for the day as we went to visit Rural Studio projects. Sarah said that she liked to your with people as a hobby. Before we set off she asked if she could take us to a church at the end of the day and we agreed.

Trahan, Holy Rosary Catholic Church, St. Amante LA

The Holy Rosary Church was designed by Trahan Architects and is located at 44450 Highway 429 in St. Amant. The church seems to be made entirely of concrete and glass. There were quite a few buckets in one of the buildings due to rainwater that was leaking inside the building through the light fixtures as well as streaks running down the concrete everywhere on the exterior. Even though the church is not very old, because of the leaking and water stains, it had a much older look. Despite all this, it was still a beautiful church. Unfortunately the church was closed when we arrived.
